No. 3 Concordia topples Rockhurst
Clippers sweep three singles matches to advance to semis
ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – No. 3 Concordia (26-2) toppled No. 32 Rockhurst (22-4), 5-1, Thursday morning from Sanlando Park at the NCAA Division II Tennis Championships.
The win advances the Clippers to the semifinals where they will challenge No. 5 Barry at 9:00 a.m. on Friday morning.
After taking two of the three matches on the doubles side, Concordia collected wins at 1, 3, and 5 singles to seal the match.
The Clippers’ No .2 tandem of Tamas Dobrotka and Geza Bazula secured the first point for Concordia as they eased their way past Victor Klintcharov and John Lazenby, 8-1. No. 3 doubles provided an easy route to the team’s second point as Andreas Lindell and David Tisserand turned back Pawel Grzegrzolka and Rodrigo Gauto-Mariotti, 8-2. The Hawks refused to lay down, however, as the No. 32-ranked brothers tandem of Ben and Zach Newell edged No. 7 Andrey Boldarev and Ricardo Frey, 9-8 (8-2).
The singles portion saw the Clippers begin to separate themselves from the Hawks as No. 9 Boldarev downed Newell, 6-4, 6-2 in straight sets at the top flight. Dobrotka followed with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Gauto-Mariotti at No. 4 flight, before Tisserand defeated Klintcharov, 6-2, 6-2.
The loss eliminates Rockhurst from the national tournament.
