Washington and Lee tops Texas-Tyler
Generals overcome 3-0 deficit after doubles play to earn victory
ATLANTA, Ga. -- No. 20 Washington and Lee recovered from a 3-0 hole following doubles play to record a 5-3 victory against Texas-Tyler in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Friday afternoon at Emory University.
The Generals dropped matches at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles by scores of 8-5 and Jeremy Becht and Ben Fass fell in a tie-break, 9-8 (7-5) at No. 2 doubles.
W&L began its comeback by easily taking the top two singles positions as Hayden White posted a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 and Taylor Shamshiri notched a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 2. Fass followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles to knot the match at 3-3.
Brian Roberts gave W&L their first lead when he ousted Robert Hodous in three sets (6-0, 3-6, 6-0) at No. 6 singles and Becht clinched the match with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory against Kevin Wright at No. 3 singles.
The win improved W&L to 16-4 overall, while the Patriots fell to 17-6.
