West Florida sweeps Florida Southern 5-0, advances to South Regional final
PENSACOLA, Fla. -- West Florida cruised past Florida Southern 5-0 to advance to the NCAA South 2 Regional final for the third consecutive season Saturday at the Ralph “Skeeter” Carson Tennis Complex.
The Argonauts (24-1) swept the Moccasins (14-10) in doubles before winning at No. 2 and 3 singles to clinch their 31st consecutive home victory against Division II opponents. UWF is now on a 19-match win streak and will play the winner of No. 3 seed Lynn and No. 6 West Alabama Sunday.
No. 4 Kevin Ducros and Bruno Savi were the first doubles pair to finish, winning 8-4.
“It was a good win for us,” UWF coach Derrick Racine said. “We started off well in doubles. Our No. 1 team has been solid all year. They finished first with a pretty convincing victory.”
Tony Rajaobelina and Domenico Sano won 8-5 at No. 2 before Elio Latela and Felipe Frattini won 8-4 at No. 3.
“At No. 3 it was back and forth,” Racine said. “We ended up pulling it out to go up 3-0 which is huge in Division II.”
No. 3 Savi was the first to finish at No. 2 singles, winning 6-1, 6-1, and No. 43 Rajaobelina clinched the match victory with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3.
“Tomorrow will be a very tough match for us,” Rajaobelina said. “We have been waiting for this moment for a long time.”
UWF defeated Lynn 5-4 March 2 and defeated West Alabama 8-1 Feb. 6 and 5-1 April 21.
“We’re trying to do the same thing we did last year,” Savi said. “I think this year we have more confidence in our game. We’re feeling better and we’re playing at home with the support of the people here. I think tomorrow will be a big day for us.”
