NYIT beats Merrimack 5-2, advances to program's first Round of 16
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. -- Sophomore Tomas Lieb clinched the match victory for NYIT against Merrimack Monday afternoon in the Division II East 2 Regional Final. The Bears won 5-2 and advance to their first NCAA Division II Round of 16. NYIT will face Armstrong Atlantic on May 8 in Surprise, Ariz.
The Bears held a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Niko Jubera and Pedro Peixoto topped Chris Barnhard and Vince Bellino 8-5 at second doubles to score the first point of the match. Lieb and Julian Marcon (Nandrin, Belgium) then defeated Matt Pronesti and Matt Lipinski 8-5 at first doubles. NYIT fought hard for the sweep but Petar Golijanin and Miguel Belfort topped Jaime Salvador and Eduardo Maurtua 9-7.
Merrimack quickly knotted the match with a victory at fourth singles but that was the final point the Warriors registered.
NYIT claimed the edge with a 6-0, 7-5 win by Peixoto over Golijanin at sixth singles and a 6-0, 6-4 victory from Salvador over Lipinski at third singles. Lieb then clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph at first singles. NYIT was leading at the final two singles matches that did not finish.
