Vassar cruises to 5-0 victory against Marywood in NCAA tourney first round
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- Vassar registered a 5-0 win against Marywood in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship on Friday morning at Middlebury College's Proctor Courts. This marks the second consecutive year that Vassar has advanced to the second round.
The Brewers wasted little time sweeping the doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead. Daniel Cooper and tri-captain Andrew Guzick picked up an 8-2 win on Court 1 against Todd Doran and Mark Van Nort while Josh Kessler and Christian Phelps did likewise to Daniel Pfafman and Ryan Mulqueen on Court 3. Vassar extended its lead to 3-0 as tri-captain Dan Freeman and Evan Udine took down Marywood's Evan Bolus and Wyatt Nolan 8-3 on Court 2.
In singles action, Freeman posted a 6-0, 6-0 shutout against Bolus on Court 2 to push the advantage to 4-0. Phelps soon finished the Pacers off with a 6-1, 6-0 win on Court 4 against Ethan Jones.
The Brewers, who had defeated The College of New Jersey in last year's first round for the program's first NCAA victory, improved to 11-12 on the season and will take on ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins (19-2), champion of the Centennial Conference, at 10 a.m. ET Saturday in the second round.
Colonial States Athletic Conference champion Marywood ended its season with a 13-5 record.
