BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Lynn defeated No. 21 GRU Augusta 8-1 on Friday afternoon at the Perper Tennis Complex. The Fighting Knights improve to 8-0 overall. Tomas Porkop shined in the win with his sixth consecutive singles victory.
Porkop paired with Alessio Iannozzi at the No. 3 doubles spot for a 8-2 win against Gustav Anderson and Nameer Shamsi to give the Blue & White the first point of the match. Vlad Cirla and Roman Turtygin defeated Romain Brunie and Romain Ferreria 8-3 at the No. 2 doubles slot for a 2-0 Knights lead. Trailing 4-6 in at the No. 1 doubles spot, the Jaguarsâ Victor Cabellos and Victor Guimarares battled back for an 8-6 win against Lynnâs Daniel Riggs and Paolo Volpicelli. GRUâs win marks the seventh in a row for the No. 7 duo in the nation.
Lynnâs third point came when Porkop handed Brunie his first singles loss of the season with a final score of 6-2, 6-0. Iannozziâs singles win at the No. 4 spot put the Fighting Knights within one point of clinching a victory. Riggs defeated Ferreria 6-0, 7-5 for Lynn to take a 5-1 lead. Cirla got back on track with a win versus Cabellos at the top spot in two sets of 6-3 before Volpicelli and Turtygin both won their matches at the fifth and sixth slots.
Fridayâs win puts head coach Mike Perez one victory shy of his 400th at the helm of the team. Perez has put together a 399-152 record to date in his 25 seasons with the Fighting Knights.
