LAS VEGAS -- No. 5 Hawaii Pacific remains unbeaten on the season with a 7-2 victory against No. 2 Armstrong Atlantic on Wednesday at the Darling Tennis Center.
The Sea Warriors (12-0) picked up the victory against the Pirates (8-4) as Armstrong suffered its fourth loss of the season - all against top 10-ranked opponents.
Play began with Hawaii Pacific taking all three doubles matches to take a commanding 3-0 lead heading into singles play. The duo of Jaume Martinez-Vich and Mattis Wetzel collected a quick 8-0 win against Ignacio Hernandez and Damian Okrutny 8-0 at No. 2 doubles. Adriano Locorotondo and Yann Renault then bested Luca Cerin and Pedro Scocuglia 8-5 at No. 3 doubles, with Thibaud Berland and Petr Michnev completing the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win against Pablo Gor and Jaan Kononov at No. 1 doubles.
Hawaii Pacific notched three consecutive set singles wins to clinch the match as No. 2-ranked Michnev knocked off No. 9-ranked Scocuglia 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles while Locorotondo downed Cerin 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and Clemens Graute defeated Okrutny 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 singles. The Sea Warriors' Wetzel outlasted No. 20-ranked Hernandez in a third-set 10-point tiebreak 6-2, 6-7 (2), 10-1 at No. 4 singles.
The Pirates' points came at No. 3 singles as No. 39-ranked Kononov beat Berland 2-6, 6-2 (10-8) and No. 2 singles as No. 10-ranked Gor upset No. 6-ranked Martinez-Vich 6-7 (7), 6-3, (10-4).
