COLD SPRING HARBOR, N.Y. -- NYIT advances to its second consecutive NCAA Round of 16 after a 5-1 victory of Chestnut Hill on Sunday afternoon in the NCAA Division II East Region No. 2 Championship at Cold Spring Harbor Junior/Senior High School.
Rafal Charkiewicz clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-4 win against Anthony Moore at fifth singles.
The Bears claimed a 2-1 advantage after doubles play. Julio Pulido and Matej Selecky topped Yoann Pham and Steven Say 8-2 at first doubles, while Nicolas Heintz and Nico Jubera defeated Michael Humes and Manuel Ceniceros 8-2 at third doubles.
Chestnut Hill's lone point of the match came at second doubles with an 8-1 triumph of Mariano Porter and Anthony Moore against Nicolas Auruccio and Francisco Aparicio.
NYIT took a 3-1 lead as Selecky quickly closed out his match at sixth singles 6-2, 6-0 versus Pedro Oranges. The Bears then went up 4-1 with a 6-3, 6-1 win by Pulido against Pham at second singles.
The Bears were up at third and fourth singles before Charkiewicz clinched at the No. 5 spot. Auruccio was at match point when his 6-2, 5-1 third singles match went unfinished. Aparicio was mounting a comeback to send his first singles match into a third set with a 3-6, 4-3 score.
