SAN ANTONIO The fifth-ranked Trinity Tigers womens tennis team advanced to the NCAA Division III quarterfinals Sunday with a 5-2 West Region victory over the No. 9 Hardin-Simmons Cowgirls at Delavan Tennis Stadium.
Trinity (21-3-1) will compete for the 13th consecutive time in the national team event, to be held May 18-20 at Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Mich. The Tigers won the NCAA crown in 2000. Hardin-Simmons completed the season at 16-7.
Tiger first-year player Laura Steinmetz of The Woodlands, Texas (The Woodlands HS), clinched the dual match delayed 4 ½ hours by rain in a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles over first-year Hazel de la Torre.
Trinity led 2-1 after doubles, winning Nos. 1 and 3. First-year player Alicia Hunt of Portland, Ore. (Catlin School), and junior Hayley Dittus of Brentwood, Tenn. (Brentwood HS), were first on the board by capturing No. 3 doubles, 8-1, over Cowgirls junior McKenzie Swindle and first-year Tracy Henington. Steinmetz and senior Christy Austin of Dallas (Ursuline Academy) gave Trinity a 2-0 lead by taking the top doubles 8-0 over Hardin-Simmons senior Stephanie Haynes and sophomore Sarah Beth Bolin. The Cowgirls picked up a point by winning No. 2 doubles as de la Torre and junior Caroline Scott beat Trinity seniors Jackie Mendillo of St. Louis (John Burroughs School) and Megan Suarez of Grapevine, Texas (Southlake Carroll HS), 8-6.
The Tigers went up 3-1 as Dittus won No. 5 singles 6-1, 6-3 over Haynes. Hunt widened Trinitys lead to 4-1 after beating Henington 6-3, 6-2 at No 2 singles.
Hardin-Simmons closed to 2-4 as Swindle won No. 4 singles 6-4, 6-2 over Suarez.
Mendillo earlier received a bid to the NCAA singles tournament, slated for May 21-23 at Kalamazoo. Austin and Steinmetz will play in the doubles event and Hunt was named a singles alternate.
Trinitys men beat Pacific Lutheran (Wash.) 4-0 on Saturday and will play in the NCAA national tournament May 18-20 at California-Santa Cruz. The singles and doubles entries will be announced Monday.
