ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.The #3 Valdosta State womens tennis team held off #6 Lynn today by the score of 5-3 in the NCAA Division II National Quarterfinals. In a bid for their ninth-straight NCAA Semifinal appearance, the Fighting Knights (23-5) fell short to the Blazers (18-2) in their comeback attempt.

The match started with the Knights falling on the No. 1 doubles court as 10th-ranked Eva Petschnig and Annika Biro got by fifth-ranked seniors Masha Bayser and Andrea Kostricova by the score of 8-1. Evening the match at one point apiece, the Knights fought back with a sounding victory at the second spot as junior Dragana Ilic and freshman Victoria Weltz defeated Anne Corten and Marina Galey by the score of 8-3. Ilic and Weltz, the ninth-ranked duo in the nation, finish the season with a perfect 23-0 record. Fighting to the end at No. 3 doubles, juniors Marie Maussion and Dina Bajramovic fell 9-7 to Iris Staub and Clair McKinnon.

Ahead 2-1 after doubles the Blazers quickly extended their lead with a win at second flight of singles as 10th-ranked Corten downed 24th-ranked Weltz 6-3, 6-0. Fighting back to even the match at 3-3, the Knights picked up victories at the fifth and sixth spots as Ilic breezed past Staub 6-0, 6-1 and Maussion took care of McKinnon 6-3, 6-2. Ilic, the 33rd-ranked singles player in the country, ends her stellar season with a perfect 26-0 record.

With the match knotted up, the Blazers regained their advantage with a win at the top singles position in a battle of two of the top-10 players in the nation. Fifth-ranked Petschnig defeated ninth-ranked Bayser 6-4, 6-3, to give Valdosta State the 4-3 lead. The Knights got a battle from Bajramovic at the fourth position to push her match to three sets, while Kostricova gave it her all at the third spot, falling short 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 as the Blazers clinched the victory.
