WACO, Texas - For the second-straight match Jelena Stanivuk clinched the final point as the fourth-ranked Baylor women's tennis team defeated No. 23 SMU, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon in the second round of the 2009 NCAA Women's Tennis Championships.

With the win, Baylor (26-4) advances to the Round of 16 which starts next weekend at College Station, Texas. The Lady Bears will face 13th-seeded Stanford, a 4-0 winner over LSU on Sunday.

"We knew that SMU would be a very tough team," said head coach Joey Scrivano. "They competed really hard. I'm glad that they are in our region and that we were able to play well against them."

SMU opened the match by winning the doubles point, just the sixth time this season that Baylor dropped the doubles point. No. 71 Pavi Francis and Natalia Bubien defeated No. 65 Stanivuk and Taylor Ormond, 8-6, on court two. On court one, No. 32 Marta Lesniak and Aleksandra Malyarchikova downed No. 13 Lenka Broosova and Csilla Borsanyi, 8-4, to clinch the point.

"SMU played great during doubles," said Scrivano. "They put us in a tough position and forced us to play well in singles."

Baylor got two quick points in singles on courts four and five. Nina Secerbegovic rolled over Nicole Briceno, 6-0, 6-0, on court five, while No. 70 Borsanyi cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Francis on court four. No. 33 Broosova trailed Bubien 5-3 in the first set, but reeled off 10 straight games to win, 7-5, 6-0, on court two.

After No. 59 Lesniak held off No. 39 Ormond, 6-3, 7-5, on court one, No. 44 Stanivuk rallied from a one-set deficit to down No. 116 Malyarchikova, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3, on court three.

"Jelena did a great job of adjusting her tactics after the first set," said Scrivano. "She was able to refocus and it worked out for us."

Baylor returns to action on Friday as the Lady Bears face 13th-seeded Stanford at 6 p.m. in College Station, Texas.
