ATLANTA, Ga. - Methodist University defeated Agnes Scott College 5-3 in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Tournament at Emory University in Atlanta, GA.

Methodist took a 2-1 lead after the completion of the doubles matches. The Monarch's first doubles pairing of Kaitlin Flaherty and Katherine Meindl, ranked 14th in the Atlantic South Region, were the first to finish, defeating Agnes Scott's Rachel Storz and Danielle Patton. Methodist took a 2-0 lead after the third doubles match, with Heather Brayton and Jennifer Hamel defeating Amanda Chaffin and Nikitris Deloach 9-8, with a 7-4 tiebreaker. The Scotties would salvage a point with a tiebreaker win of their own, as Natalie Mayer and Hannah Kraus defeated Rachel Purser and Dana Powell defeated 9-8 (7-2).

Methodist would extend its lead to 3-1 with a win in the second singles match by Katherine Meindl, who defeated Natalie Mayer 6-3, 6-0, and would come to within a point of clinching the match after Kelli Shelton defeated Agnes Scott's Amanda Chaffin 6-1, 6-0 in the sixth singles match.

Agnes Scott would battle back, getting wins from Shamonique Jones, 6-3, 6-2, over Heather Brayton in the fourth singles match, and from Rachel Storz, 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 , over Kaitlin Flaherty in the first singles match. However, Methodist's Dana Powell would clinch the team victory with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win in the fifth singles match.

The third singles match between Dansielle Patton and Rachel Purser was left unfinished.

With the victory, Methodist, now 23-2 this season, will advance to play Emory in the second round of the tournament on Saturday, May 15 at 10:00 a.m.. Agnes Scott finished its season with an 11-8 record.
