SMU Steals Past Pepperdine, 4-1, In NCAA Opening Round

STANFORD, Calif.- No. 31 SMU defeated No. 43 Pepperdine 4-1 on Friday afternoon in the opening round of the 2010 NCAA Women's Tennis Championship.
The Mustangs (24-4, 6-0 Conference USA) advance to Saturday's second round match and will face the winner of Stanford/Fairfield. The Waves conclude their season at 12-14 overall and 3-1 in WCC play.
SMU claimed a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point, notching victories at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots.
Marta Lesniak defeated Anamika Bhargava 6-4, 7-5 in a battle of players at the No. 1 spot to take a 2-0 lead. Edyta Cieplucha followed with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph at No. 5, but Pepperdine got on the board with a 2-6, 6-0, 6-1 win on court three from Ali Walters.
Leading 3-1, Pavi Francis clinched the match with a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 6.
