FREDRICKSBURG, Va. -
The College of New Jersey women’s tennis team opened the 2010 NCAA Champions with a victory over the University of Mary Washington as the Lions knocked out the host institution by the score of 5-3.

The win puts the 16th-ranked Lions, who received a bye in the opening round, into the third round of the tournament on Sunday as they face the winner from the Carnegie Mellon University and Drew University match. The win was the fourth in a row for TCNJ as they improved to 16-4 on the season.

The 18th-ranked Eagles concluded their season with a mark of 16-8.

The Lions trailed 2-1 following the doubles matches as TCNJ garnered that point in the third spot as sophomore Emily Petersack (Mercerville, NJ/Notre Dame) and freshman Lauren Balsamo (Wall Twp., NJ/Wall) picked up an 8-5 victory.

In singles, senior Jackie Shtemberg (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Ramapo) got the Lions rolling with a solid 6-2, 6-3 win over Courtney Goimarac, while Karisse Bendijo (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) posted a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win at third singles.

TCNJ claimed the final two slots in singles play securing the win as Balsamo won 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) at fifth singles and senior Stefanie Haar (Morganville, NJ/Marlboro) coasted 6-2, 6-0 at the sixth position.
