No. 25 Virginia bounces Wake Forest
10th-ranked tandem secures doubles point, spurs Cavs to win
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – No. 26 Virginia remained undefeated this season by topping No. 52 Wake Forest 5-0 on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference match-up at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center. The Cavaliers improved to 3-0 this season, while the Demon Deacons fell to 1-1.
Virginia took a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. The Demon Deacons took an early edge as Emilee Malvehy and Ryann Cutillo upset 16th-ranked Maria Fuccillo and Rashmi Teltumbde 8-3 at the No. 2 position. The Cavaliers drew even at No. 3 as Lindsey Hardenbergh and Erin Vierra topped Martina Pavelec and Brigita Bercyte 8-3. With the opening point on the line, tenth-ranked Emily Fraser and Hana Tomljanovic rallied from a 6-4 deficit to win 9-7 at No. 1 against 14th-ranked Kayla Duncan and Kathryn Talbert.
In singles, the Cavaliers quickly clinched the dual match victory with three consecutive set wins. Hardenbergh cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Talbert at the No. 2 position. Teltumbde defeated Anna Mydlowska 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6 to make the score 3-0 before Tomljanovic downed Duncan 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 to clinch the Virginia victory.
Fuccillo rallied from losing the first set against Cutillo at No. 5 to win in a third set tiebreaker for the Cavaliers’ final point of the day.
