No. 8 California (Pa.) falls for first time
Pondicas picks up Vulcans’ lone singles win

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Sophomore Jade Pondicas posted a straight-set victory at No. 5 singles on Tuesday night, as No. 8 California (Pa.) suffered a 6-1 loss to Penn State at the Indoor Tennis Club.
With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 6-1 overall this season with a 4-1 mark against NCAA Division I programs. Meanwhile, Penn State improves to 3-1 this year after posting victories over Bucknell and Cal U on Tuesday.
The Nittany Lions claimed the doubles point against the Vulcans. In the first doubles match of the evening, Pondicas and senior Laurie Navarro suffered an 8-1 loss at No. 3 doubles to Denise Zobeideh and Sarah Henderson. Penn State then clinched the doubles point when the 68th-ranked team of Petra Januskova and Fernanda Perrotta earned an 8-5 victory against juniors Franziska Steinhardt and Annabel Pieschl at first doubles. In the final doubles match, juniors Axelle Fernandez and Anastassiya Zherdeva dropped a narrow 8-7 match to Penn State’s Carmen Sandor and Amy Simidian.
Penn State expanded its lead when 59th-ranked Januskova posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles against Steinhardt. Sandor then registered a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Zherdeva at the third spot before Zobeideh gave the Nittany Lions a 4-0 lead following a 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles against over Fernandez.
The Nittany Lions' Simidian then dealt Pieschl a 7-5, 7-6 defeat in the No. 2 spot. Pondicas, who is ranked No. 42 in NCAA Division II, captured a 6-4, 6-0 victory against Perrotta at the fifth slot. Henderson then dealt a 6-0, 7-6 defeat to Navarro at sixth singles in the final match of the night.
