No. 9 Clemson fires by Furman
Stanford posts Furman's lone victory on day of close losses
CLEMSON, S.C. – Ninth-ranked Clemson defeated Furman 6-1 on Thursday afternoon at the Clemson Indoor Tennis Center. Paladin sophomore Michele Stanford posted a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 win against Laurianne Henry at No. 6 singles to post the only winning score for Furman.
The Paladins forced many close matches with tie-breakers needed in both the Nos. 5 and 6 singles matches. In the No. 5 match, Caroline Magnusson defeated Paladin freshman Amanda Murray 6-3, 4-6, 1-0.
At No. 1 singles, Clemson's 12th-ranked Josipa Bek defeated No. 69 Monica Arguello 7-5, 6-4, while 48th-ranked Keri Wong beat Furman's Lauren Kline, 6-1, 6-2, in the No. 2 singles match. Nelly Ciolkowski won a tight 6-4, 7-5 match against Paladin freshman Katherine Oudin at the No. 3 spot, and Klara Vyskocilova defeated Furman's Margaret Boyette 6-4, 6-4, in a close match at No. 4.
The Tigers (8-0) swept the doubles matches to win the doubles point. Second-ranked Bek and Wong defeated Boyette and Kline 8-5 at No. 1 doubles, while Ciolkowski and Magnusson ran past Murray and Oudin 8-3 in the No. 2 doubles match. The Paladins also forced a close contest at No. 3 doubles with Maria Belaya and Vyskocilova defeating Arguello and Stanford in a tie-breaker 8-7(5).
