No. 5 West Florida gets pair of wins

PENSACOLA, Fla. – No. 5 University of West Florida (2-0) opened its spring 2011 season with an 8-1 victory against No. 28 Florida Tech and a dominating 9-0 victory against Stillman at the Ralph “Skeeter” Carson Tennis Complex. UWF dropped just one singles match for the day and only lost two games to Stillman.
UWF recorded its first victory of the season with an 8-1 win against No. 28 Florida Tech. UWF swept all three doubles matches. Caitlyn Baines and Jacqueline March formed the No. 1 doubles duo and defeated Katarina Huba and Monica Price, 8-4. Taylor Brewster teamed with Luiza Sonnervig at No. 2 and took the 8-3 victory against Abigail Greif and Stephanie Dohner. The Argos recorded another 8-3 victory at No. 3 with Hannah Durham and Mariana Sonnervig defeating Abbey Keister and Alexis Weinnig.
UWF also took five of the six singles matches. Brewster recorded her first win against a ranked opponent of the season with a 7-6, 3-6, 11-9 victory against No. 24 Huba. Luiza Sonnervig defeated Greif, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2. Baines recorded a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Price. March defeated Dohner, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 4, and Jessica Hsu defeated Weinnig, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 5. Florida Tech recorded its only point at No. 6, as Keister defeated Durham, 6-2, 1-6, 10-2.
UWF dominated in the second match of the day. Stillman won just one game in singles and one game in doubles. The duos of Brewster and Luiza Sonnervig and Naomi Higa and Hsu recorded 8-0 victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 lines, respectively. Baines and March defeated Jade Thornton and Clarissa Benson, 8-1, at No. 2.
UWF also easily took the singles matches, dropping only one game. Brewster, Luiza Sonnervig, Baines, Durham and Higa all blanked their respective opponents at the Nos. 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 lines. Hisa recorded a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Andrea McCorvey at No. 4. With the win, UWF moved to 2-0 on the season.
