VALDOSTA, Ga. – No. 5 West Florida dropped to 3-4 on the season with a 6-3 setback against No. 4 Barry in a neutral-site match Saturday in Valdosta, Ga. UWF has lost the first two of three total matches the Argonauts will play in Valdosta this weekend.

Barry (7-0) swept the UWF women in doubles. Barbi Pocza and Angie Werschel defeated Caitlyn Baines and Taylor Brewster 8-0 at the No. 1 position. Pocza and Werschel are the No. 4 doubles duo in the nation and the No. 1 doubles team in the south region.

At the No. 2 position, Laura Boguet and Alex Gwizdowski defeated UWF’s Jacqueline March and Luiza Sonnervig by an 8-2 score. The doubles tandem of Olivia Matuszak and Julie Stas of Barry then defeated Yana Bokareva and Mariana Sonnervig 8-3 at the No. 3 position to sweep the doubles portion of the match.

No. 14 Pocza came back in singles to defeat Bokareva 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 1 position, giving Barry the 4-0 lead. Barry clinched the victory when Matuszak defeated Baines 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 4 line.

UWF recorded its first point of the day as Luiza Sonnervig defeated No. 38 Caroline Wendling in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 13-11 at the No. 3 spot. Brewster also had a victory against a ranked opponent, defeating No. 23 Werschel 2-6, 7-6, 10-5 at No. 2.

Barry’s Stas defeated Mariana Sonnervig 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6. UWF made the final score 6-3 when March defeated Gwizdowski 7-6, 7-6 at the No. 5 slot.
