COLUMBUS, Ga. – Clayton State took its first step towards returning to the Sweet 16 in Altamonte Springs, Fla. with a convincing 5-1 victory against Wingate in the Southeast Regional at Columbus State.

The 12th-ranked Lakers improve to 15-7 and will square off against Columbus State on Tuesday at 1 p.m. Wingate’s season ends at 21-2.

Clayton State got off to a strong start by winning two of the three matches in doubles. Viktoriya Semyrodenko and Ivana Krommelova blanked Wingate’s Kara Stasikelis and Kali Ferguson 8-0 at No. 1, followed by Katie White and Marie Cercelletti winning 8-1 against Wingate’s Ali Evers and Samantha Alschlager at No. 2.

In singles, Martina Dedaj gave the Lakers a 3-1 lead as she rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 victory against Ferguson at No. 5. Krommelova followed with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph versus Winston at No. 3, and Semyrodenko finished it off with a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Stasikelis at No. 1.

Wingate's lone victory came at No. 3 doubles as Olivia Poole and Morgan Winston defeated Martina Dedaj and Jessica Budd in a close match, 9-8.
