West Florida tops Valdosta State
Argos remain perfect in Gulf South Conference play
PENSACOLA, Fla. -- No. 9 West Florida (16-2) improved to a perfect 7-0 in Gulf South Conference (GSC) play on Saturday as the Argos defeated Valdosta State (8-8) 6-3. The loss was VSU’s first conference loss of the season. West Florida is currently riding a six-match winning streak.
West Florida won two of the three doubles matches. At the No. 1 line, Caitlyn Baines and Sheila Smiley defeated Sara Braun and Alina Nagel 8-3. Baines and Smiley form the No. 18 doubles tandem in the nation.
Argonauts Hannah Durham and Fernanda Amaral tallied an 8-5 victory against Maja Ehses and Tina Trautmann at No. 3.
Valdosta State’s lone doubles victory came at the No. 2 position where Michelle Fischer and Juliana Boehm defeated UWF’s duo of Barbara Oliveira and Mariana Sonnervig 8-3.
UWF won four of the six singles matches. At the No. 1 line, Oliveira, who is ranked No. 29 nationally in singles, defeated Fischer, 6-1, 7-6.
Luiza Sonnervig recorded a 6-3, 6-4 straight-set victory against Ehses at No. 3. Smiley needed three sets to defeat Trautmann, 6-7, 6-7, 6-4, at No. 4. Baines defeated Nagel, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 5.
VSU had victories at Nos. 2 and 6. At No. 2, Braun defeated Mariana Sonnervig, 6-4, 6-2. Boehm defeated Argonaut senior Naomi Higa 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, at No. 6.
