California (Pa.) ousts Virginia State in first round of Division II regional play
CALIFORNIA, Pa. -- Top-seeded California (Pa.) posted a 5-0 win against eighth-seeded Virginia State on Saturday morning at Roadman Park in the first round of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament.
With the victory, the Vulcans extended their win streak to six matches and improve to 15-9 this season. Cal will face the winner of Mercyhurst-West Liberty in the second round of the NCAA tournament on Sunday at 10 a.m. Meanwhile, Virginia State ends the season with a 19-4 overall record.
Cal took an early 3-0 lead by sweeping doubles for the sixth-consecutive match. The No. 21 duo of sophomore Ramona Czakon and freshman Alexandra Borgenhoff opened play with an 8-1 victory at the second position against Amanda Spencer and Zaire Simmons. At first doubles, the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West tandem of junior Lucie Sipkova and sophomore Lucie Rey posted its ninth-consecutive win with an 8-1 victory against Amanda Spencer and Zaire Simmonds. Senior Jade Pondicas and freshman Maxime Colen closed doubles play with an 8-1 win at the third slot against Sharmane Tonkins and Kayla Kale.
The Vulcans sealed the match victory with a pair of wins in sinlges, while also holding the lead in the remaining four unfinished matches. Borgenhoff, the PSAC Freshman of the Year, cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win against Uzzell at the third position, marking her team-best 28th singles victory this season. Rey clinched match win by recording a 6-0, 6-0 victory at fourth singles over Harry.
The winner of Sunday's match will advance to the NCAA Round of 16 from May 8-11 in Surprise, Ariz. Cal has advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament five times in the last six seasons.
