California (Pa.) advances to Division II Round of 16 for seventh year in a row
SOUTH PARK, Pa. -- The top-seeded Vulcans earned a 5-0 victory against fourth-seeded Mercyhurst at Glen Creek Tennis Club on Sunday morning in the second round of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament.
With the win, Cal (Pa.) extends its win streak to seven matches and improves to 16-9 overall. The victory also advances the Vulcans to the Round of 16 for the seventh-consecutive year. Cal will Queens (N.Y.) in Surprise, Ariz., on May 8. Meanwhile, Mercyhurst finishes the season at 15-5 overall after making its third appearance in the NCAA tournament in the last four years.
The Vulcans swept doubles play for the seventh-consecutive match and 11th time this year, all team victories. Sophomore Ramona Czakon and freshman Alexandra Borgenhoff opened doubles play with an 8-1 victory at the second position against Rebecca Haener and Courtney Thompson. In a meeting of two All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West doubles teams, junior Lucie Sipkova and sophomore Lucie Rey extended their win streak to 10 matches following an 8-3 win against Sarah Baich and Caroline Bristol at the first slot. Senior Jade Pondicas and freshman Maxime Colen completed the doubles sweep with an 8-3 victory at third doubles against Katelyn Caniford and Taylor Wedlake.
In singles play, Borgenhoff extended her winning streak to six matches by collecting a 6-2, 6-0 victory at the third position versus regionally-ranked Haener. Rey then clinched the match victory on Sunday with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Baich at fourth singles.
Cal has advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament five times in the last six years, including last year when it lost to Barry.
