Coe sweeps Franklin 5-0 to remain perfect in NCAA first-round matches
SAINT LOUIS, Mo. -- Coe remained perfect in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Thursday, defeating Franklin 5-0. It was Coe's fourth win in four first-round appearances.
Coe's number one doubles picked up the first win of the day, as senior Michelle Schupbach and junior Tai Lucero downed Heather Pasek and Bethany Harris 8-0. It was the 27th win of the year for the pair, tied for the second most in school history behind the pairs' 29 wins together last season. The win was the 53rd total win of the year for Lucero, which is third-most in school history behind the 58 from Schupbach last year and Lucero's 55.
At number two doubles, junior Elizabeth Hoffmann and freshman Laura Birky downed Melissa Sanders and Chelsea Platt 8-3. The Kohawks picked up their third doubles win at number three as freshman Tamara Washington and sophomore Jordan Ferree defeated Rain Tuley and Chelsea Howell 8-4.
Freshman Amy Sebastian won her 24th match of the year at number three singles as she downed Bethany Harris 6-0, 6-0. Hoffmann locked up the Kohawk victory with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Becky Bonomini at number six singles.
With the victory, the Kohawks improved to 20-4 on the year. Coe will face 13th-ranked DePauw in the second round on Friday.
