Second-ranked Williams silences No. 12 Chicago

WHITTIER, Calif. -- Williams extended its undefeated streak to seven on Thursday, as it defeated No. 12 Chicago 9-0.

Williams sweep of the Maroons began in doubles. Kara Shoemaker and Rebecca Curran continued their strong play, as they defeated the U. Chicago’s top pair of Megan Tang/Tiffany Chen 8-3. Williams pairs of Kathleen Elkins/Maria Pylypiv and Hannah Atkinson/Monica Pastor followed suit, both winning 8-4.

In singles, the story was much the same. All matches only needed two sets to be decided. Freshman Linda Shin impressed with a 6-2, 6-1 in the third slot; while her classmate Atkinson also came away with a 6-1, 6-3 decision in the sixth. The Ephs dominated most of play, with the closest match ending up 6-4, 6-4 in favour of Shoemaker.

The tournament began with 36 teams. Heading into the semifinals on May 19, only Salisbury, Cabrini, Amherst and Williams are left to compete for the title.
