Amherst wins title with sweep of MIT

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Amherst extended its win streak to six matches with a 9-0 sweep of No. 17 MIT in the championship game of the 2014 Nor’easter Bowl hosted by Wellesley.

Improving to 8-2 on the season, the Jeffs have dropped just four points during their current win streak, having earned 9-0 victories in four of their past six outings.

Headlining the Purple & White’s doubles pairings, Jordan Brewer and Gabby Devlin improved to 3-0 on the weekend thanks to an 8-2 decision against Lauren Quisenberry and Julia Hsu. Jen Newman and Zoe Pangalos edged out Elysa Kohrs and Victoria Tam in the second slot 9-7, while Sarah Monteagudo and Safi Aly posted an 8-3 victory against Michelle Dutt and Krystal Lai.

In singles action, Brewer made quick work of Kohrs, dropping just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 triumph. Devlin tripped up Wendi Kong 6-1, 7-5, while Newman dispatched of Sunnie Lampl 6-1, 6-0. Sue Ghosh turned away Lai 6-1, 7-6 (7-1), while Pangalos outlasted Hsu in the day’s only three-set match 6-2, 2-6, 10-6. Monteagudo wrapped up play at the bottom of the Jeff order with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Vynnie Kong.
