No. 6 Pomona-Pitzer pulls away from La Verne

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- Senior Claire Willey celebrated senior day with a win at No. 6 singles to break a 3-3 tie and freshmen Maddie Gordon and Rosemary Pelch won at singles and doubles to lead Pomona-Pitzer to a 6-3 win against No. 16 La Verne on Friday afternoon at the Pauley Tennis Complex.

With the win, the sixth-ranked Sagehens improve to 12-5 on the season and 5-1 in the SCIAC, while La Verne falls to 12-3 overall and 4-1 in league play.

Pomona-Pitzer took a 2-1 lead after doubles, as senior Sammy Chao and sophomore Lea Lynn Yen won 8-2 at No. 1, and Pelch and Gordon won 8-2 at No. 3. Gordon earned a quick 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles to push the lead to 3-1. The Leopards tied it up 3-3, before Willey was able to earn a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6 to give Pomona-Pitzer the lead back.

Pelch then provided the clincher with a narrow 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 5 to put the Sagehens ahead 5-3, and sophomore Mae Coyiuto earned the final point with a 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 10-6 win at No. 2 singles to conclude the match.
