Second-seeded Winthrop defeats Liberty to advance to Big South finals

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. -- Winthrop advanced to the finals of the Big South Conference championship, defeating No. 3 Liberty 4-0 Thursday evening at Gardner-Webb. The Eagles will make their 13th consecutive appearance in the championship match.

Winthrop won a tightly-contested doubles point with victories from the first and third position. Tijana Uzelac and Beth Williamson scored the first win, defeating Cameron Richard and Valerie Thong 8-6 at No. 3. Andressa and Alice Garcia clinched the point at No. 1, with an 8-6 triumph against Rebekah Jenkins and Maria Khval.

The Eagles tallied the first three singles points. Alice Garcia topped Rebekah Jenkins 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2, Andressa Garcia defeated Belen Rivera 6-1, 7-5 at the top flight and Monica Aguado beat Nicola Wellman 6-3, 6-0 on court six.
