Concordia (N.Y.) defeats rival Queens (N.Y.) to advance to Round of 16

FLUSHING, N.Y. -- Concordia (N.Y.) defeated rival Queens (N.Y.) 5-2 on Tuesday afternoon in the NCAA East Regional Finals at the USTA National Tennis Center. With the victory the Clippers have earned a spot in the Round of 16.

The match began with doubles action as the No. 1 duo of freshman Costanza Mecchi and junior Romana Tabak defeated Jennifer Fridman and Anna Rodionova 8-2 to claim the first win for Concordia. The Knights would respond with an 8-3 victory in the No. 2 doubles match as freshman Valeriia Cheban and junior Alla Kravchuk fell to Yevgeniya Plevako and Andrea Samson.

The Clippers would earn a decisive win in the No. 3 match to earn a 2-1 overall match advantage as junior Linda Eliasson and freshman Stefanie Canals-Baker were victorious against Kim Xiong and Aylin Mehter.

In singles action, Canals-Baker would be the first one to finish as she secured a 6-1, 6-0 win against Xiong for Concordia in the No. 6 match. Shortley thereafter Mecchi, in her No. 1 match, would defeat Mehter 6-2, 6-1 to give the Clippers a 4-1 match lead and one step closer to the victory.

Queens managed to claim one singles win as Rodionova defeated Cheban in the No. 5 match 6-3, 6-1 but Concordia's Tabak earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory against Plevako in the No. 2 match to give the Clippers a 5-2 win. The remainder of the matches would go unfinished.

DII men's tennis championships: Barry comes back from 3-0 deficit to win fourth national championship

The Division II men's tennis championship was held May 21-24 at Altamonte Springs, Florida. Barry defeated Columbus State 4-3 for the 2019 DII men's tennis national championship.
