NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- No. 1 North Central (Ill.) finished third in the Cardinal Opener behind No. 3 Wisconsin-Oshkosh and No. 2 Wisconsin-La Crosse on Friday at the Res/Rec Center.

UW-Oshkosh won the meet, recording 147 points, with UW-La Crosse scoring 142 and the home team scoring 137. 

Two of UW-Oshkosh's three victories came in the throwing events. Nick Baatz won the shot put with a distance of 57-2 3/4, while Pete Delzer captured the weight throw with a mark of 63-4. Baatz added a second-place finish in the weight throw with a cast of 59-5 1/2.

Matt Lawrence took the remaining UW-Oshkosh victory with his personal-best time of 1:55.33 in the 800-meter run.

North Central got things off to a great start in the distance medley, sweeping the top three places. Juliano Lodi, Richie Ruske, Ryan Bartell, and Matt Muth teamed up on the winning squad (10:29.65).

Cardinal pole vaulters also swept the top-three positions. Peter Geraghty cleared 16 feet, six and ¾ inches to take the top spot, while Josh Winder won a tiebreaker with teammate Frank Wlelinski at 15 feet seven inches.

Geraghty's victory was one of five on the night for the Cardinals. John Crain won the 3,000-meter run (8:30.12), with Muth finishing in second (8:43.68). Other first-place finishes came from Dionte Hackler in the 400-meter dash (49.80) and David Janet in the 5,000-meter run (15:14.42).

The 4x400-meter relay team of Hackler, Derek Nelson, Marlen Hamilton, and Mustapha Olaoye finished in second (3.19.47). Other top-finishers included Dayton Henriksen, who finished third in the 200-meter dash (22.62) and Ben Dickshinski finished in third in the 5,000-meter run (15:19.01).
