GREENSBORO, N.C. – Florida State’s 4x100m Relay Team and Virginia Tech thrower Marcel Lomnicky have been named Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Co-Performers of the Week for the first week in April while Virginia Tech’s Queen Harrison has been selected as the Women’s Performer of the Week. Each performer earned regional qualification with the marks that saw them to the top of the NCAA Performance Lists.
Florida State’s relay squad consisted of Michael Ray Garvin, Brandon Byram, Maurice Mitchell and Charles Clark. The student-athletes turned in the nation’s fastest collegiate time this week to claim the league accolade. The team picked up first place honors at the Texas Relays last weekend in Austin, Texas. The quartet made the lap in 38.75, only 15 one-hundredths of a second off the school and ACC record time. The Seminoles are a tenth of a second faster than second place in the collegiate rankings.
Virginia Tech’s Lomnicky, a sophomore from Nitra, Slovakia, threw the hammer 71.70m to take first place at the Texas Relays and earn ACC recognition. The long toss came in Lomnicky’s first outdoor appearance of the season. He ranks first nationally and second among Tech’s all-time performers in the Hammer throw, only 0.98m off Spyridon Jullien’s Virginia Tech and ACC Record throw of 72.68m in 2005.
Virginia Tech’s Harrison, a junior from Richmond, Va., returned last week from injury to take first place at the Texas Relays in the 400m Hurdles to open up her outdoor season. Her time of 57.38 ranks tops in the nation. Harrison also ran the leadoff leg of Virginia Tech’s 4x400m relay team which finished in 3:37.44 earning regional qualification and sixth place in the prelims.
This week will be the final tune-up before the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships which open on April 16 at Miami’s Cobb Stadium. The meet runs through April 18 in Coral Gables.
