MACOMB, Ill. - Competing in a field that featured four NCAA Division I team didn’t faze Augustana a bit on at the Lee Calhoun Invitational. The Vikings, ranked eighth in NCAA Division III, scored in every event except one en route to scoring 119.33 points and placing second in the 16-team field.

Illinois State won the team title with 187.50 points with Paul Olsen’s squad in second with 119.33. Wisconsin-Milwaukee was third with 104.50 and Lincoln took fourth with 87.33. Western Illinois (76.50), Monmouth (74.50), Marquette 964.33), St. Ambrose (41), Ashford (29), McKendree (23), Millikin (19), Knox (18), Principia (16), Illinois Track Club (11), Fuzion Athletics (10) and Fontbonne (3) rounded out the field.

Augustana added four names (in five events) to a growing list of NCAA Division III national meet qualifiers. Sophomore Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) hit the qualifying mark in the 100 with a time of :10.72, which placed him second in the event. He also won the 200 in :21.83. Junior Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) finished just sixth in the 110 high hurdles but his time of :14.85 was under the national qualifying standard. He won the 400 intermediate hurdles in :54.46.

Junior Adam Myers (Dixon HS, Dixon, Ill.) placed second in the hammer throw with a qualifying toss of 183’ 9”. Junior Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) was sixth in the hammer (176’ 6”) and fifth in the discus (162’6”) and both of those marks were over the qualifying standard. For good measure he added a sixth place performance in the shot put with a throw of 48’ 8 ¾”.

Rindone in the 200 and Davis in the 400 intermediates were the only event winners for the Vikings. However, they placed at least one competitor in each event except the 10,000, where they didn’t have an entrant. In six individual events they had at least two placewinners.

The 400 relay of freshman Jay Graffanga (Geneva HS, LaFox, Ill.), sophomore Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.), senior James Wood (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) and Rindone placed third in :42.19. The 800 relay of senior Dane Burmeister (Crystal Lake Central HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.), freshman Jesse Alexander (Cedar Falls HS, Cedar Falls, Ill.), sophomore Devon Pace (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) and freshman Jared Spivey (Annawan HS, Annawan, Ill.) took fourth in 1:31.71. The 1600 relay of Davis, Wood, sophomore Ryan Brummet (Riverdale HS, Port Byron, Ill.) and Patton took fifth in 3:22.10. The 3200 relay of sophomore Steve Rogers (Crystal Lake South HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.), freshman Andrew Allabastro (Lyons Township HS, LaGrange, Ill.), freshman Cody Sharko (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) and freshman Szymon Ligas (St. Bede Academy, Spring Valley, Ill.) finished seventh in 8:17.79.

In the 1500 the Vikings placed three runners. Sophomore Justin Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) was fifth (4:00.73) while junior Billy TenBusch (Prairie Ridge HS, Cary, Ill.) was sixth (4:00.75) and sophomore Brian Pollastrini (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) was eighth (4:02.11). The 3000 steeplechase also had three Augustana placewinners. Freshman Isaac Trostle (Willowbrook HS, Lombard, Ill.) was fifth in 10:13.97. Senior Tim Faith-Rosley (Glenbrook South HS, Glenview, Ill.) took seventh in 10:27.54 and senior Lucas Westblade (Will Carleton Academy, Hillsdale, Mich.) was eighth in 10:38.25.

Junior Mike Tisza (Hersey HS, Prospect Heights, Ill.) was fifth in the 3000 in 9:00.04. Senior Greg Weigand (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) took sixth in the 800 in 1:56.00 and senior Jason Langslet (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) was seventh in 1:56.10. Patton took seventh in the 400 in :49.57. Junior Marty King (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) was seventh in the 400 intermediate hurdles in :56.43.

Freshman Nick Sinon (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) finished fifth in the high jump with a clearance of 6’ 4 ¼” and seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 42’ 8 ¾”. Senior Alex Mikos (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) took sixth in the javelin with a toss of 167’ 8”. Senior Patrick Zeunik (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Bloomington, Ill.) was seventh in the long jump (21’ 11 ¾”) and sophomore Mike Tovar (Mooseheart HS, Chicago, Ill.) was eighth at 21’ 2 ½”. Senior Eric Chalus (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) was eighth in the pole vault with a height of 14’ 1 ¼”.
