In the opening match of the NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball New York Regional Championship, Stevens Institute of Technology hung on for a 30-28, 31-29, 27-30, 22-30, 15-12 victory over Vassar College.

The New York Region matches are being played at New York University's Coles Sports in Manhattan.

Thursday's opener matched the #4 seed in the region (Stevens) with the #5 seed (Vassar).

After dropping the first two games of the match before rebounding to take games three and four, Vassar (21-12) raced out to a 4-1 lead in game five. Stevens (31-5) managed to tie the game 6-6. The teams alternated points until the Ducks finally took an 11-10 lead and held on the rest of the way.

Dawn Herring's 14 kills, Melissa Rhode's 20 digs and Gina Joyce's 49 set assists paced Stevens.

Anita Stavin had 19 kills, Amanda Hsiung had 20 digs and Lauren Gass had 30 set assists for the Brewers.

Stevens now faces the winner of the match between #1 seed New York University and #8 seed Baruch College on Friday night at 7pm. The NYU-Baruch match is scheduled for 8:30pm on Thursday.
