LOS ANGELES . Tanya White had 19 kills and the Cal State L.A. defense had a 91-70 advantage in digs as the Golden Eagles held off a late-charging Cal State San Bernardino team, 30-23, 30-22, 24-30, 29-31, 15-8, to claim the Pacific Region Championship.

With the victory in the NCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Tournament, top-seed Cal State L.A. (27-2) returns to the Elite Eight for the first time since 1992.

"It was a great match," CSULA head coach Bill Lawler said. "I thought we pulled through in the end and we're looking forward to the Elite Eight. I'm proud of the girls how they kept battling and battling."

The Golden Eagles will face Lock Haven, the Atlantic Region champion, on Dec. 1 at a site to be determined. Lock Haven defeated Lees-McRae, 3-1.

Luana Cavalcanti had 15 kills and 20 digs, Ashley Hardwick recorded 24 digs and Tiare Tuitama added 15 digs and 51 assists.

"We all played together. We know we had to bring total confidence to this tournament," senior setter Tuitama said. "When we bring confidence, we know we can win."

For CSU San Bernardino (21-8), the run for a third consecutive Pacific Region title ended. However, the Coyotes put up a fight. For the second straight night, CSUSB found itself down 0-2 and rallied to win two games to force a fifth game.

In game five, CSUSB took a 2-0 lead, but service errors helped turned the tide. With the score at 9-8 in favor of CSULA, the Golden Eagles rolled off six straight points . which included three CSUSB errors . to end the match.

"You couldn't have asked for a more exciting match," CSUSB head coach Kim Cherniss said. "We didn't start off too strong in finding the right combination on the floor."

Cal State San Bernardino was led by Shanon Stewart who had 21 kills. Jessica Nelthorpe had 22 digs and Traci Weamer chipped in 10 kills and 16 digs.
