COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 19th-ranked Ohio State (22-8 overall) women's volleyball team swept Marshall (26-6), 3-0 (30-25, 30-26, 30-22) Friday night to advance to the second round of the NCAA Championship. The Buckeyes will face Ohio (32-2) a 3-1 (28-30, 30-18, 30-22, 30-23) winner over Alabama (23-11) Saturday at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena. OSU's Ami Stevens (So., Centerburg, Ohio) scored a team-high 14.5 points for the Buckeyes with Nicole Britenriker (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) and Danielle Meyer (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) adding 11.5 each. Stevens had a team-high 13 kills (.357), a solo block and an assist block. Britenriker posted nine kills (.615) and five assist blocks while Meyer had nine kills (.300), an ace serve and three assist blocks. For Marshall, Kelly-Anne Billingy recorded a match-high 17 points with 13 kills (.125), two ace serve, a solo block and two assist blocks. Amber Sims added 11 points with 10 kills (.368) and a solo block.
Ohio State opened game with a 3-0 lead with kills form Meyer and Felicia Jones (Jr., Concord, Ont.) and a Marshall error. At 8-7, OSU, three consecutive kills from Stevens took the lead to 11-7. An OSU error and two Billingy kill cut the margin to 11-10. At 14-13, two Marshall errors and an ace serve from Marisa Main (Jr., Louisville, Ky.) opened a 17-13 Buckeye lead. Ohio State took the lead to game point at 29-21 with a Ashley Kiel (Jr., Allenton, Wis.) kill. Marshall rallied with a Sims kill, two ace serves from Billingy and a Billingy kill to close the margin to 29-25. OSU closed out the game with a Britenriker kill to win, 30-25. The Buckeyes hit .355 in the game to .097 for Marshall.
Marshall, with a Billingy kill took a 9-8 lead in game two. OSU scored four straight points starting with a kill from Stevens to tie the game at nine. A Marshall error, a ace serve from Kiel and a kill by Stevens gave OSU a 12-9 lead. The Buckeyes held a 23-20 lead when four consecutive OSU error gave Marshall a 24-23 lead. A Britenriker kill tied the game at 24 and a Kiel-Britenriker block and a Jones kill put Ohio State ahead at 26-24. Following a Marshall time out, their error put the score at 27-24. A Sims kill stopped the run at 27-25. Kills from Kiel and Britenriker set game point for Ohio State at 29-25. A Buckeye error made it 29-26. A Britenriker-Kiel block ended the game for the Buckeyes at 30-26. Ohio State hit .278 in the game to .189 for Marshall.
Tied at five in game three, a Marshall service error, a Main ace serve and a kill from Kiel gave OSU a 8-5 lead. At 16-14, two Marshall errors and a Britenriker kill put the score at 19-14. At 24-20, OSU, three Marshall errors gave OSU a 27-20 lead. A Billingy kill and one from OSU's Amanda Miller (Sr., Littleton, Colo.) moved the score to 28-21. A Marshall error set match point at 29-22. A Sims' kill stopped the point at 29-22. The Buckeyes closed out the game with a Kiel kill to win, 30-22, taking the match, 3-0. Ohio State hit .258 for the game to .118 for Marshall.
For the match, Ohio State hit .296 to .137 for Marshall. The Buckeyes had a 45-38 advantage in kill and a six-to-four margin in ace serves. OSU's Main recorded a match-high three aces. Marshall gave up 11 service errors to eight for OSU. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 36-31 margin in digs. OSU's Main recorded a match-high 10 while Maggie Arisa had nine for Marshall. At the net, the Buckeyes out blocked Marshall, 10 to five. OSU's Britenriker recorded a match-high five assist blocks. For the Buckeyes, Main had a match-high 36 assists while Marshall's Katie Stein recorded 28.
