The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team swept Lynn University in straight sets by the scores of 25-23, 25-22 and 25-19 in action inside the Bob Martinez Center in play on Thursday afternoon. The Sharks will now advance to the NCAA Division II South Regional Semi-Finals vs. the winner of the Florida Southern/Saint Leo match on Friday, November 21st at 5 pm.

After trailing for the entire first set, a kill from senior outside hitter Melinda Gorman (Sarasota, Fla.) put the Sharks in the lead for the first time at 24-23. Gorman would connect with senior setter Valia Petrova (Sofia, Bulgaria) on the very next play to put the Sharks up one set to none.

Gorman carried the Sharks in the first set, registering seven kills and just one error in 12 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage. Even thought NSU was out-hit .222 to .195, the Sharks tallied three more kills in the set. Freshman middle Molly Sigerich (Downers Grove, Ill.) and junior outside hitter Jenerra McGruder (Euless, Tex.) each contributed with three kills. Senior Setter Valia Petrova (Sofia, Bulgaria) had ten assists.

NSU carried their momentum over into the second set, racing out to a 3-0 lead. Lynn would rally to take a 15-12 lead, but from there on it was all NSU, with the Sharks finishing the set on a 13-7 run. NSU hit a match high .314 in the set, led by Gorman and senior middle Emily Carle (Missouri City, Tex.) with four kills apiece. Petrova added three kills and eight assists.

The Sharks left little doubt in the third set, hitting on all cylinders to lead 7-2 early. From there on NSU would cruise to victory, eventually winning the final set 25-19. NSU hit .216 as a team in the third set, led by Gorman once again with four kills. McGruder and Petrova chipped in with three kills each. Lynn was held to a .098 attack percentage, in large part due to the Sharks blocking.

For the match, NSU out-hit Lynn .239 to .182. Nova Southeastern tallied five more kills, two more assists, two more aces, four more digs and six more total points than the Fighting Knights.

Gorman rose to the occasion, slamming 15 kills, hitting at .444 and totaling seven blocks. McGruder and Carle followed with eight kills. Petrova posted seven kills, 29 assists, four digs and a block. Libero Kathleen Yony (So., Miami, Fla.) and defensive specialist Alison Kalish (Jr., Miami, Fla.) had 12 and 10 digs, respectively.

NSU will now play the winner of the Florida Southern/Saint Leo match at 5 pm on Friday, November 21st at 5 pm in Tampa, Fla.
