Nov. 21, 2008

Allendale, Mich. - The Northwood University volleyball team saw its 2008 season come to an end with a 3-0 loss at Grand Valley State Friday night (November 21).  Game scores were 25-22, 25-22, 25-14.

GVSU is now 30-3 overall with the win.  Northwood finishes the year with a 16-14 overall record.

The first set was tight throughout, with the Lakers leading 22-21 with Northwood serving.  Grand Valley State made the plays down the stretch, scoring three of the final four points to earn a 1-0 lead.   The final stats of the set proved to be close – the Lakers won the set by finishing with one more kill and two fewer attack errors.

In the second set, things were again close until the final few points. Grand Valley State’s offense had been held in check in the set until the score was tied 20-20.  The Lakers then scored five of the final seven points, thanks in large part to four GVSU kills.  NU actually out-hit the Lakers in the set (.140-.089), but five service errors proved crucial.

Seizing the momentum from the 2-0 lead, the Lakers jumped out to a big early advantage in set three.  GVSU scored seven of the first eight points and eventually held leads of 10-2 and 20-6.  Grand Valley State’s defense forced Northwood into a -.240 attack percentage in the final set (3-9-25).

Three Timberwolves shared team-high honors in kills – Ashley Carr (Marysville, Mich.), Sladjana Mitrovic (Lazarevac, Serbia) and Ivana Stanojevic (Jagodina, Serbia) all finished at six kills.  Sarah Pollard (Naperville, Ill.) finished with a match-high 11 digs.
