Nov. 23, 2008 – The Truman Bulldog volleyball squad secured a spot for its fifth career trip to the Elite Eight – all since 2001 – after a 3-0 (-15, -14, -18) win at top-seeded Emporia State in the South Central Regional Championship Sunday night.
The Bulldogs (32-7) will face Nova-Southeastern (Fla.) – the South Region champion – in the Elite Eight at a site to be determined on Thursday, Dec. 4.
Truman held the Hornets to a -.044 hitting percentage, including key ESU offensive threats Arica Shepard (-.375), Megan Koster (-.130) and Brittney Miller (-.100). As a counter, the Bulldogs hit .220 and put down 12 blocks to Emporia’s three in the sweep.
Truman’s Allie Cherven led all players with 11 kills and was a member of the South Central Region all-tournament team along with seniors Eli Medina and Melissa Keck, as well as junior Lauren Graybeal. Keck hit .389 with eight kills for Truman, while senior Whitney Boehler posted a match-high 12 digs.
A trio of mid-set rallies propelled the Bulldogs to the victory, as Truman rattled off a 7-1 first-set run, an 11-1 second-set rally and a final-set 12-3 stretch to pull away from the Hornets in every frame. Despite committing eight service errors, the Bulldogs picked up four aces – all at key moments – to maintain rallies and keep Emporia State from picking up a crucial side-out.
Truman returns to the Elite Eight for the second time under fourth-year head coach Jason Skoch. The Bulldogs’ last appearance was in 2005 at the University of Nebraska-Kearney that resulted in a 3-1 loss to the host Lopers. The Bulldogs have reached the National Championship match twice but have never captured the top spot.
