#4 Wayne State Downs Scrappy Upper Iowa Squad

#4 Wayne State defeated Upper Iowa 3-1 Saturday afternoon in NSIC Volleyball action in Fayette, Iowa. Scores of the match were 28-26, 25-18, 23-25 and 25-15. Wayne State was led by senior Lea Hartigan (Treynor, Iowa) and junior Tali Fredrickson (Grand Island, Nebraska) who each added 13 kills. The win makes the Wildcats 25-3 overall and 16-3 in the NSIC and the loss drops the Peacocks to 8-19 overall and 5-13 in the league.
The Peacocks surprised the Wildcats in the first set as UIU led WSC by as much four points at 19-15. The Wildcats battled back late in the first set forcing three straight attack errors by the Peacocks to give Wayne State a 24-23 lead. The two teams battled back and fourth, but the Wildcats used a kill by Hartigan and an error by the Peacocks to take the first set 28-26.
The Wildcats came out slow in the second set falling behind 6-2 early. Wayne State would battle back to tie the game at 6-6 on a four point run. The Wildcats and Peacocks would battle until the middle of the set when Wayne State used a seven point run to take a 22-15 lead on their way to a 25-18 win in the set.
The Peacocks hit a team high .229 in the third set with only five kills. Wayne State had six attack errors in the set as the Peacocks took down Wayne State 25-23 in the third set.
Wayne State put the Peacocks against the ropes in the fourth set as the Wildcats hit a match high .310 with 15 kills. The Wildcats jumped out to a 7-3 lead and never looked back leading by as much as nine points at 20-11 to take the fourth set 25-15 and the match 3-1.
The Wildcats were led by Fredrickson and Hartigan who each added 13 kills. Jennifer Hefner added 10 kills for WSC to go along with three solo blocks and six blocking assists. Senior Diedra Artz was credited with 41 set assists in the match. Leigh Connot led Wayne State defensively with 21 digs.
Wayne State will conclude the 2010 regular season Friday evening with a home contest vs. Augustana College starting at 7:00 p.m. at Rice Auditorium in Wayne.
