Christopher Newport Moves On By Beating Gallaudet, 3-0

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Captains of Christopher Newport University defeated the Bison of Gallaudet University 3-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in the Freeman Center. CNU will take on Eastern University tomorrow at 6:30pm.
Set scores for the match were 25-11, 25-20 and 25-17.
The Captains took the lead in the first set with two kills by Bailey Jensen (Ashburn, Va.) and one from Cory Harris (Williamsburg, Va.). With Chelsea McClure (Montclair, Va.) serving, the Captains went on a seven-point run giving them a 15-7 lead. The Captains maintained the lead for the rest of the set only allowing the Bison 11 points.
Gallaudet fought back in the second set tying the score at 7-7. Kills from Caitlyn Jansen (Lorton, Va.) and Jessie Heavenrich (Cambria, Calif.) helped the Captains pull ahead with a score of 15-11. CNU finished strong with a 25-20 win.
Starting the third set, the Bison remained strong, keeping the score within one point and tying the score at 3-3. With Abby Hogge (Clifton, Va.) serving, CNU went on a four-point run, giving the Captains a 7-4 lead. The set continued to remain close until a Gallaudet time out, where the Captains pulled ahead with Kara Elder (Charlottesville, Va.) serving, winning the set 25-17.
Leading the Captains was Jansen with nine kills followed by Heavenrich, McClure, and Harris who all had six kills for the Captains. Elder led Christopher Newport with 16 digs and Heavenrich led the Captains with a total of 30 assists. Jansen put up three blocks and Harris put up two blocks for Christopher Newport University. McClure and Hogge both had three service aces for the Captains.
The Bison were led by Ann Whited with eight kills followed by Jessica Israel with 4 kills. Lauren Benedict led Gallaudet in digs with 13 and Paige Johnson had 11. Johnson also had a total of 18 assists for the Bison.
The win improves the Captains to 36-2 on the year tying the program record for wins in a season set last year.
