LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Behind a 17-kill performance from Amy Mahinalani DeGroot and a 15 kill performance from Ali Troost, the 18th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball picked up a 3-0 win over Long Beach State University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday evening at USC's Galen Center.

With the win, the Toreros improve to 25-5 overall and will advance on to play the winner of the USC and New Mexico match on Saturday at 5 p.m. With the loss, the 49ers finish the season with a 25-8 overall record.

Troost led all players with her 17 kills, hit for a .295 clip and racked up 15 digs to post a double-double, while Troost also had a double-double with her 15 kills and 11 digs. USD also had three more players record double-digit digs in Kelsi Myers (13), Kandiss Anderson (13), and C'era Oliveira (14). Myers was the third Torero to have a double-double as she also had 43 assists.

In the first set, the 49ers jumped out to an early 3-1 lead to grab the momentum, but a Katie Hoekman kill then jump started a 7-5 Torero run that was capped on a Myers dump to give USD its first lead of the match at 8-7. Long Beach then grabbed the next two points and for several volley's, it was a point-for-point battle until a Carrie Baird service ace gave USD a 15-13 lead, which then led to a media timeout. The point-for-point battle continued after the timeout with both teams having their turn with the lead and neither team having a lead bigger one. Then with score at 20-19 in favor of San Diego, a LBSU ball handling error gave the Toreros a two-point edge at 21-19, and USD was then able to maintain that lead and claimed the first set 25-22.

In the second set, Long Beach jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and they were able to maintain that three-point edge in the early going. Then with the score at 9-6 in favor of the 49ers, a Basch kill ignited a 4-1 Torero run that was capped on a DeGroot kill to tie the score at 10-10. After LBSU grabbed the next point, a DeGroot kill followed by a Troost kill gave USD its first lead at 12-11. San Diego would then hang on to its lead for the next several volley's, before the 49ers regained the lead at 20-19 on an Ashley Lee kill, forcing the Toreros into a timeout. USD would then tie the score up twice on DeGroot kills at 20-all and 21-all before a Hoekman solo block gave USD a 22-21 lead, forcing Long Beach State into a timeout. After a Hoekman kill gave USD a 23-21 lead, the 49ers grabbed the next two points to tie things up at 23-all, forcing the Toreros into a timeout. USD would then grab set-point at 24-23, but Long Beach had other ideas as they grabbed the next two points to take set-point at 25-24. Both teams would then have set-point each two more times until USD had a 29-28 lead, and a Troost kill then put things away and gave USD a 30-28 win to into the break up two sets to none.

In the third set, the 49ers again grabbed the early momentum as with the score knotted at 4-4, a Caitlin Ledoux kill ignited a 5-1 49er run to give LBSU a 9-5 lead, forcing the Toreros into a timeout. Out of the timeout, a Troost kill ignited a 6-1 Torero run that was capped on a LBSU attack error to give USD a 12-10 lead, forcing the 49ers into a timeout. Long Beach would grab the next two points, but San Diego responded with a 4-0 run that was sparked on a LBSU attack error and the run was capped on a LBSU attack error to give USD a 16-13 lead, again forcing Long Beach into a timeout. USD never lost control of the match from this point on as they then completed the sweep with a 25-19 win.
