Baruch sweeps Hunter
Santaigo pots 35 assists wins tournament MVP for the Bearcats
NEW YORK, NY -- Behind a spirited effort from junior setter Melinda Santiago, Baruch beat archrival Hunter for the 2011 CUNY Athletic Conference Championship 3 games to 1 (25-14, 20-25, 25-23, 25-22) in the final played at CCNY on Thursday night.
"We played really well from the beginning and that's what we needed tonight," said Santiago. "I couldn't be happier for this team, because we really came together this year. It was my third time in the championship game and now we're finally going to the NCAA's."
Santaigo, the Tournament Most Valuable Player, finished with 35 assists, eight digs and six kills. Jessica Wu and Megan Moody each had 10 kills to lead the Bearcats (24-10), while senior Libero Posey Wilson lhad a game-high 24 digs. Baruch will now represent the Conference in the NCAA Championship next week for the second time in school history.
Hunter (21-11) was led by seniors Christine Luebcke with 11 kills and 11 digs and Katina Boutis with 33 assists and seven digs. Freshman Paulina Jobczyk had ten kills in the match and Kimberly Hirten led the Hawks with 16 kills.
