Penn St. sweeps Liberty in opener
Scott’s 16 kills helps Nittany Lions to first round victory
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Ariel Scott had 16 kills and Penn State began its bid for a fifth consecutive national title with a three-set victory against Liberty in the first round of the NCAA tournament Friday night.
Maddie Martin added eight kills and 10 digs for the Nittany Lions (24-7) in the 25-16, 25-16, 25-16 victory.
Kelly Haseman had 16 digs for Liberty (20-13), which was limited to a 0.075 hitting percentage.
The Flames outblocked the Nittany Lions 3-0 in the third set, but Penn State never trailed by more than two points in the match.
The Nittany Lions will face Delaware in the second round Saturday. The Blue Hens beat American 3-1.
