Iowa State cruises by Minnesota
Jenson tallied 19 kills and added 12 digs for the Cyclones
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Iowa State defeated Minnesota 3-1 on Friday night.
Iowa State outhit Minnesota .248 to .186 on the night, and both teams finished with 57 kills. The Cyclones finished with 64 digs to 60 for the Gophers. Minnesota had eight service aces in the first two sets, but did not record one in the final two. Iowa State also doubled up the Gophers in blocking with 16.0 to eight for Minnesota.
Senior Hailey Cowles had 15 kills, 11 digs and three blocks in her final career match. Ariana Filho finished with nine kills, three service aces and three blocks in her final match, while Jessica Granquist had 11 digs. Granquist finished her career third on the Gophers’ all-time digs list with 1,737.
Ashley Wittman had 15 kills and four digs, while Katherine Harms had 14 kills and 12 digs. Mia Tabberson tallied 49 assists, nine digs and two blocks.
In the first set Iowa State jumped out to a 7-6 lead in the first set, but Minnesota answered with an 8-0 run and took a 14-7 lead on a kill by Harms. The Gophers extended it to an eight-point lead at 18-10 on a service ace by Filho.
The Cyclones answered with three straight points and cut the Gophers’ lead to 18-13, but Minnesota answered with a 4-0 run punctuated by a service ace from Harms. The Gophers put away the set at 25-18 on a kill by Filho.
Minnesota limited Iowa State to a .031 hitting percentage and seven kills in the first set, while the Gophers had 14 kills, hit .212 and had four service aces. Harms and Wittman each had four kills.
The Gophers fell behind 20-16 in the second set, but Wittman sandwiched a pair of kills around a Filho kill to cut it to 20-19. Minnesota tied the set at 21 on a service ace by Tabberson. The two teams sided out twice to tie the score at 23. Tenisha Matlock followed with a kill to make it set point, and Carly Jenson delivered a kill to take the set and even up the match.
Iowa State hit .400 (14-2-30) and limited Minnesota to a .211 (16-8-38) hitting percentage. The Cyclones also had three blocks to none for Minnesota.
The Cyclones led 7-5 early in the third set, and blew it open with an 8-1 run to take a 15-6 lead. Minnesota did not get any closer than seven points the rest of the way as Iowa State moved out to a 25-15.
Iowa State had 17 kills in the set, and outhit Minnesota .310 to .133. The Cyclones also tallied 30 digs in the set.
The Cyclones jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the fourth set, but the Gophers fought back to tie the set at nine on a kill by Wittman. Iowa State scored five of the next seven points to take a 14-11 lead. Minnesota tied the set again at 19 after a Cyclone attack error.
With the score tied at 22, Tabberson and Filho combined on a block to give the Gophers their first leadoff the set. Iowa State came right back with the next two points and moved ahead 24-23 when Alison Landwehr and Matlock combined on a block. Filho delivered a kill to fight off match point to tie it at 24.
Iowa State moved ahead 25-24, but Filho delivered another kill to tie it at 25. Minnesota had its second set point after an attack error by Iowa State, but Carly Jenson answered with a kill to tie it at 26.
The Cyclones scored made it match point at 27-26, but Harms and Cowles delivered consecutive kills to make it set point at 28-27. Victoria Hurtt delivered a kill to tie it at 28, but Cowles made it set point against with a kill. Iowa State scored the next two points to make it match point, and Hurtt delivered a kill to close out the match.
Iowa State was led by Jenson who had 19 kills and 12 digs, while Hurtt had 15 kills and hit .353. Kristen Hahn had a match-high 19 digs and two service aces, and Alison Landwehr had 43 assists, 10 digs, four kills and three blocks.
