Saint Francis outside hitter Elise Dumouchelle interns on Capitol Hill

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Saint Francis rising sophomore outside hitter Elise Dumouchelle (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) has spent her summer in the Nation's Capital working with congressman Bill Shuster's office (R-PA 9th District) as part of the Ann Epphard Memorial Scholarship and Congressional Internship that she received at the end of the school year.

The scholarship was set up by retired Congressman Bud Shuster (PA, 9th) in 2007 to honor Ann Epphard, the first Pennsylvanian woman to rise to the position of Chief of Staff to a member of Congress, serving Congressman Shuster.

"Ann served as a mentor to innumerable inters and staff, nurturing their talents and ensuring that they enjoyed a rich and rewarding experience on Capitol Hill," Shuster told Saint Francis. "She made it a personal priority to support young peoples' participation in the political process in Pennsylvania and throughout the nation and she would be please to know that her name is being used to help advance Saint Francis students in this special way."

Dumouchelle is the first freshman to win the award, typically given to upperclassmen. The Virginia native has a perfect 4.0 GPA while triple majoring in International Business, Political Science and Spanish.

During her time on Capitol Hill, Dumouchelle spent the majority of her time working in the District, Personal, and Committee Offices for Shuster's office as he chairs the Congressional Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. She helped write congressional records, gave public tours of the Capitol Building, wrote informational reports for the Congressional staff as well as prepare for Congressional Hearings.

"I learned what it is like to balance district politics along with federal politics," Dumouchelle said. "I was also able to attend lectures from several Congress men and women including Deputy Majority Whip Patrick McHenry."

In her freshman season for the Red Flash, Dumouchelle saw action in 21 matches including one start. She finished third on the team with 17 service aces including a season-best five against LaSalle.

"I am satisfied with my experience on Capitol Hill," Dumouchelle added. "I am honored to have been able to serve our country by serving Congressman Bill Shuster."
