No. 5 Cal Lutheran 3, Pomona-Pitzer 2
The old mantra goes, “the good teams always find a way to win” and that certainly was the case Tuesday night for Cal Lutheran. The No. 5 Regals never quite found a rhythm but still gutted out a 3-2 (25-21, 25-27, 25-20, 21-25, 15-13) victory against Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) foe Pomona-Pitzer.
The normally stout CLU defense was gouged for 32 kills by Pomona-Pitzer outside hitter Allie Frappier but the Regals responded with four attackers going for double figures in kills.
Cal Lutheran was led by Allie Eason and Kylie McLogan who both notched double-doubles. Eason had 13 kills to go along with 11 digs while McLogan led CLU with 19 kills and 11 digs. Hayley Tamagni was second with 14 kills and three block assists while Lauren Rohach finished with 11 kills and four block assists.
Jackie Russell made the Regals attack go with 50 assists while Jena Chavez contributed 12 of her own.
No. 6 Elmhurst 3, No. 24 North Central (Minn.) 0
NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- Kailtyn Wilks and Marci Novak combined for 28 kills to lead Elmhurst to a 25-16, 25-22, 25-18 win against North Central.
Elmhurst, ranked sixth in the latest AVCA Division III coaches' poll, improved to 14-1 overall and 1-0 in the CCIW with the win. North Central slipped to 6-10 (0-1 CCIW) with the loss.
Wilks and Novak totaled 14 kills apiece in the win. Wilks finished with a match-leading .545 hitting percentage (14-2-22) and a match-high four blocks. Novak also pounded down 14 kills while hitting .480 (14-2-25).
Sam Szarmach added six kills and eight digs for the Bluejays while Megan Reynolds tallied five kills. Jess Suarez added four kills for the Bluejays. Lauren Loren totaled a team-leading 19 assists while Hannah Nimrick and Katie Rueffer finished with eight assists apiece. Lorenz and three aces in the match while Hannah Lessen registered a team-leading 12 digs.
No. 8 Juniata 3, Indiana (Pa.) 0
HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Juniata made quick work of Indiana (Pa.) on Tuesday night, winning 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-16). The Eagles improve to 13-0 on the year and look to continue their winning ways at the Christopher Newport Invitational this weekend.
"Some of these midweek games, when you're getting ready for big weekends, can be trap matches for sure," head coach Heather Pavlik said.
"We respect IUP and they've given us good matches in the past for sure. We're really getting better at focusing on one match at a time. That's what I've been preaching. It's something you've got to do if you want to be good. If you get too far ahead of yourself, in this game with rally scoring, teams can take a game here or there from you and all of a suddenly you can find yourself down."
Juniata got ahead early jumping out to a 7-2 lead off the service of freshman Kelly Reynolds. Senior Amy Miller paced the Eagles with a match-high 10 kills and a stellar .500 attack percentage.
