ST. JOSEPH, Minn. -- No. 3-ranked St. Thomas hit a sizzling .481 and scored a 3-0 win against No. 10-ranked St. Benedict in MIAC volleyball play Wednesday night in St. Joseph.
The Tommies (14-1 overall, 5-0 MIAC) have a 14-match win streak. They pushed their victory string against conference opponents to 20.
Nicole Potts had 10 kills, nine digs and two aces; Sara Atkinson had 11 kills and hit .786; Kelly Foley had nine kills and hit .643; Paige Brimeyer had eight kills and hit .583; Maddie Reese had 20 assists and two aces; and McKenna Reagan had 16 digs.
The Blazers (14-2, 6-1) hit just .141 and had a 13-match home win streak halted.
No. 7 Mount Union 3, Hiram 0
ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Mount Union, ranked No. 7 in the nation, defeated Hiram 3-0 on Wednesday evening in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
The Purple Raiders improve to 20-0 on the season as the Terriers fall to 12-6.
In the 25-12, 25-18, 25-16 win, Mount Union was led by senior Taylor Webb who tallied nine kills and junior Lauren Mastroine who notched a game-high 20 digs. Freshman Allison Twining chipped in with six kills and 11 digs.
Junior's Sarah Schleich and Brittany Woodard recorded double-digit assists with Schleich at 20 and Woodard at 19.
The Terriers were led by Marissa Jay who had 11 kills as Tierra Moore registered 12 assists. Danielle Day tallied 18 digs for Hiram.
No. 8 Juniata 3, Geneva 0
HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Eighth-ranked Juniata gutted out a win against Geneva 3-0 (25-20, 27-25, 22-21). The Eagles hit for a team .320-attack percentage on their way to improving to 16-1 on the season.
Juniata took the lead early in the first set at 11-6, but the Golden Tornadoes did not go down easy and started to mount a comeback at 22-14 Juniata. With set point looming, Geneva was able to fight off two points and force the Eagles into a timeout. Juniata finally closed out the first set on a kill from senior Amy Miller.
Geneva took the first substantial lead of the second set, 6-4. But the Eagles quickly climbed back into the match evening the score at six all. After a few miscues by the Juniata, senior Courtney Lydick drove down a commanding kill to put the Eagles back in the lead 12-11.
The Golden Tornadoes were able to pull out another lead in the set, 19-17, until Miller drilled home a kill and began serving duties for the Eagles. Juniata evened the game at 19 and forced a Geneva timeout at 20-19 Eagles. The two teams continued to trade points until the Eagles shut the door on the second set off the service of freshman Bryce Arnold.
In the third set Geneva took the lead 11-7, but the Eagles charged back to even the set at 13-13. Juniata fought hard to come back a second time in the set knotting the score at 18-all. The Eagles earned match point off a solid block from junior Christine Sumner to close out the three-set sweep. Miller finished with a match-high 11 kills and hit for a .391 attack percentage. Arnold was right behind her with 10 kills and Lydick rounded out the top hitters of the night with a .364 average.
