IRVINE, Calif. - Fourth-ranked California built a four-goal lead after three quarters and held off No. 9 UC Irvine, 8-6, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at Anteater Pool Sunday afternoon. Cory Nasoff and Brian Dudley led the Golden Bears (17-6, 3-3 MPSF) with two goals each.

Griffin Lerman and Greg Enloe scored two goals apiece for the Anteaters (10-12, 1-6), who were playing their final home game of the season.

Lerman scored both of his goals in the first quarter as the teams were tied at 2-2 after one period.

Frank Reynolds (4:04) and Nasoff (1:06) scored the only goals in the second quarter to give Cal a 4-2 halftime lead.

The Bears' Ivan Rackov scored an extra-man goal with 6:58 left in the third for a 5-2 margin, followed by goals from Dudley (6:30) and Luka Saponjic (4:45), extending the lead to 7-2. UCI's Brandon Johnson notched his 59th goal of the season at 4:17 on a power play and Thomas Kruip followed with an extra-man goal of his own at the 1:45 mark to cut the deficit to 7-4 before Dudley scored with 15 seconds left in the third for an 8-4 lead.

UCI scored a pair of extra-man goals in the fourth quarter at the 5:13 and 1:00 marks for the final margin.

UCI goalie Matt Johnson had 11 saves while Jacob McIntosh had five for Cal.

The Bears close out the regular season with a home match against Sanford on Saturday at 10 a.m. and road match against Pacific on Sunday at 12 p.m.
