The Whittier College men's water polo team ended its weekend with a 1-1 showing on Saturday afternoon at the Claremont Convergence picking up a win over Lindenwood to highlight the action.

On Friday the Poets suffered losses to Santa Clara and Johns Hopkins and opened up play on Saturday with Concordia (Cal.). The Eagles rebounded from an earlier season upset to the Poets with a 14-6 win.

Whittier was held scoreless in the first eight minutes and faced a 3-0 second quarter deficit before getting on the board. Keary Schlactus found the back of the net at 5:55 for the purple and gold.

The Poets ended the second quarter on a 2-1 run and only trailed 5-3 at the break.

Wes Paulson and Robert Nihei each scored in the second quarter for Whittier.

The Eagles held Whittier without a goalin the third quarter and put six on the board in the fourth en route to the eight-goal win.

Paulson added his second of the game at 5:09 of the fourth, Erick Gonzalez scored at 4:30 and Paulson was at it against to round out the scoring for the Poets. His hat trick goal came at 3:58, one-second after the purple and gold drew an ejection.

In the night cap, the Poets were led by the hot hand of Gonzalez who recorded seven goals with an assist. He drew two ejections and finished with one steal in the win.

Chet Schuster pounded home a pair of goals while Joey Kienle, Paulson, Michael Eachus and Ian McDiarmid all had one goal.

Nihei and Eachus finished with two assists apiece for the Poets.

Whittier will return to action on Thursday evening as it faces Vanguard and Mercyhurst in its final tune-up before SCIAC play opens on Saturday, October 16.
