WESTWOOD, Calif. -- The eighth-ranked Pepperdine men's water polo team defeated a pair of opponents at the UCLA Invitational on Saturday. The Waves took care of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 13-5 and later in the day defeated La Verne 20-7. Seniors Colin Carroll and Stephen Loomis led the team with five goals apiece in the tournament.

In the first game of the day the Waves (2-0) defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. After jumping out to a 5-2 lead in the first quarter, the Waves never looked back. Matthew DeTrane, Spencer Hamby, Carroll and Wesley Sherburne all netted two goals apiece to lead the team.

Hamby started the scoring off for the Waves 19 seconds in, giving them an early lead that they never relinquished. At the 4:50 mark in the first quarter, Sherburne scored his first collegiate goal to give the Waves a 3-2 lead. Goalkeeper Bence Valics picked up where he left off in 2011, coming up with some big saves for a double-digit total of 13.

In game two against La Verne, Loomis led the Waves with a four-goal output, as Carroll and sophomore Marko Madaras each tallied hat tricks in the 20-7 victory.

Madaras' first goal as a Wave came in the first quarter to give the Waves a 3-0 lead. Loomis added goals in the first and second quarters and came on strong with two to finish out the game in the fourth quarter. The Waves converted seven of eight 5-on-6 opportunities. For the second-consecutive game, Valics finished with a double-digit save total, this time with 12.
